199 Lives: The Travis Pastrana Story
199 Lives: The Travis Pastrana Story opens with a catalogue of motocross rider Travis Pastrana's championships and injuries--and, without question, it's the injuries that truly demonstrate Pastrana's staggering drive. This is a guy who dislocated his spine when he was 15 years old, then went on to compete against the best motocross cyclists in the world, then won multiple freestyle events, then nearly died (and nearly killed his passenger) in a car crash, then went on to do rally car racing, which involves a passenger... rarely has anyone exorcised their worst fears in such a literal way. What makes Pastrana even more intriguing is his odd combination of dorkiness (he approaches his waking life with an almost aggressive naivete) and the unsettling underside implied by the night terrors that haunt his sleep. 199 Lives also explores Pastrana's family, particularly his supportive (yet deeply stressed-out) mother and his super-competitive father, through a combination of interviews and charming home movie footage. But of course, it's not the psychological portrait that ultimately sells this movie--it's the astonishing footage of successful jumps and the even more astonishing footage of unsuccessful jumps, capturing stomach-churning accidents that no human being should be able to walk away from. Yet Pastrana does, and usually smiles as he does it. Fans will find 199 Lives essential; non-fans may find 199 Lives will turn them into fans. --Bret Fetzer

The Gravity Games - Summer Two - Freestyle Motocross [VHS]
Speeding a motorcycle up a dirt hill and launching into a high jump through the air, then landing safely only to do it over again is gutsy enough. Now picture someone doing that, but then also leaving the seat of the bike to briefly perform a riding trick while airborne. That's what "freestyle motocross" is all about, and the best performers in this gnarly new sport go for the gold in this recap of the 1999 Gravity Games held in Providence, Rhode Island. The filmed action is often heart stopping, and the video also benefits from a narrative format that weaves profiles of the young riders in with clips of them in competition. The footage of riders performing their routines is often startling, as the tricks they perform "during air" definitely fall into the category of "don't even think about doing this at home." For example, during a "cliff hanger" a motorcycle rider, while sailing upward during a jump, rises from his seat and flies above the motorcycle, holding on only with his feet hooked under the handlebars, before settling back down on the seat to make his landing. The camera work in this video is first-rate (it was originally televised by NBC), and the judicious use of slo-mo highlights underline how perilous yet graceful freestyle motocross can be. --Robert J. McNamara

Motocross Madness 2
Like your motorcycle games big, bold, and beautiful? All those superlatives and more apply to Motocross Madness 2, the sequel to one of the most fun (if not the most realistic) motocross simulations ever created.
This sequel improves on the original by offering larger racing environments, more modes of play, and much more detailed graphics. The environments now have a full complement of trees, cacti, bushes, and other solid objects to smack into, and some game modes even introduce highway traffic into the mix. There's nothing like jumping over a moving semi on your way to the finish line! The new Pro Circuit career mode adds a lot of replayability (and long-term strategy) to the game, and fun multiplayer modes like tag offer a refreshing break to standard racing when playing online.
On the downside, all the new graphical goodness requires some serious computer hardware. While a 3-D accelerator isn't required, that's a little like saying your car doesn't need an engine because you can still push it. With a decent 3-D card, at least a 350 MHz processor, and plenty of RAM, however, the game really comes to life. Those of you with 3-D audio cards are also in for a treat, as it becomes possible to tell where other riders are just by listening.
It took some time to get used to Motocross Madness 2's completely over-the-top physics. Hitting even a minor jump launches the bike straight up into the air, and bigger hills can leave you staring down at the treetops for over five seconds. It's a little ridiculous, but once we gained some familiarity with the tracks it actually made the game a lot of fun. More air time means more chances to perform outrageous aerial stunts, from the Tail Grab to the back-bending Cordova. Unfortunately, it also means unfortunate encounters with trees are much harder to avoid.
If you buy sports games based only on their ability to realistically portray the sports they are simulating, Motocross Madness 2 will disappoint. For those of you who like big air, big stunts, enormous open environments, and lots of challenging arcade action, this game is better than its predecessor in every way. --T. Byrl Baker
